Description
Wooden joiners mallets are an essential item in the artisan woodworker or leatherworker’s tool chest. They can also serve as a useful tool in your kitchen or bar (for crushing ice, for example).
Each custom wooden joiners mallet is built to order, and we will consult with you to dial in the exact wood and features you’d like. Due to natural variations in the color and grain of the wood, appearance for the selected woods may vary slightly. No color additives or stains are used, and all of our custom wooden joiners mallets will come finished with a hand rubbed finish. You can either select from our standard Rubio MonoCoat finish that we use on our art and furniture pieces, or can opt for our 100% food safe finish, using our Bespoke Board Butter, which consists of food grade mineral oil, organic food grade beeswax, and organic food grade carnauba wax.
All of our wooden joiners mallets are fully ambidextrous, symmetrical (by default, unless some other customization is chosen), and either side can be used interchangeably. Where requested, some select special features may be added (mallet inlays, handle inlays, different handle shape, thumb groove, etc.). Our fully customizable joiners mallets start at $160 and up, based on wood, size, and any special features added, and the final price will be modified based on your selections (we will contact you via email after checkout to dial in final choices). We use these mallets every day in our own work, and know how important they are, so we are happy to help build something for you that you will want to look at and use regularly.
We offer three different standard size mallet heads, and three different standard size handle lengths (this may be further customized, depending on use case). Typically the Regular Handle length is paired with Regular Mallet Head, a Short Handle length would be paired with a Short Mallet Head, and so on, but this is entirely customizable. The standard dimensions of these are approximately as follows (there may be small variations in the finished sizes, but this is the average):
Regular Mallet Head (5×3), Short Mallet Head (4×2.75), Large Mallet Head (6.5×4)
Regular Handle (10.5 overall length), Short Handle (8.5 overall length), Long Handle (12.5 overall length)
The lead time for this custom item to be built and shipped in our current work queue is averaging about 3-4 weeks. We currently offer these in any combination of Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Padauk, and Hickory, and will contact you via email after purchase to dial in with your your custom choices and combination. Selection or request of custom woods that we might not have on hand may extend this a bit. If you are in faster need of a high quality wooden joiners mallet, we often have a number of mallets in stock and ready to ship in our Shop here!
